Etihad Airways is set to bring Sweden’s west coast even closer to UAE residents with a direct flight to Gothenburg set to launch later this year. From 17 December, Etihad Airways will fly between Abu Dhabi and Gothenburg four times per week, becoming the first airline in the Middle East to fly directly to Sweden’s second-largest city. The flights will run through until 21 March, 2027, so whether you’re thinking of a winter break or spring sojourn, this characterful Scandi city should go straight to the top of your bucket list. If you’re wondering what to do once you get there, Gothenburg is where the Göta River meets the sea, with an archipelago a short ferry ride from the centre, seafood markets, and the wooden streets of the Haga district. Those planning a winter break can also look forward to discovering the Christmas market at Liseberg, which transforms into a winter wonderland each festive season, complete with 2,000 decorated trees, traditional market stalls, ice skating, and no less than 5 million twinkling lights. A post shared by Göteborg/Gothenburg (@goteborgcom) Flights are now available to book via etihad.com, with return fares in economy priced from Dhs4,010 and in business from Dhs18,770. The route will be operated by the Airbus A321LR, the newest aircraft in the Etihad fleet, with two First Suites, 14 Business seats and 144 in Economy. Gothenburg becomes the 15th new destination to join the Etihad route network in 2026, joining flights to Baku in Azerbaijan, Tbilisi in Georgia, Bucharest in Romania, Tashkent in Uzbekistan and Mallorca in Spain, which all joined the Etihad network this year.
