Temps could hit 49º today, but how hot can the UAE get?

It’s officially an El Niño year, a cyclical weather pattern associated with extreme weather – and most notably increased global temperatures. Long-term UAE residents are no strangers to the summertime struggles of steering wheel superheating and speed walking between the Metro and the office. It’s not our first solar spiciness rodeo, so thankfully, we’re pretty well prepared for the ravages of it. We have the benefit of almost universal AC, water bottle refill stations, temperature controlled pools and shaded parking. Our friends elsewhere are fairing less well. The UK is reporting the ‘Strongest El Niño in living memory’; Belgium, Spain, France, Greece and Japan are all battling lethal heatwaves – the hottest on record for some countries. And whilst the symptoms of El Niño’s reign are more easily observed in these areas, seasonal anomalies have been spotted in the Gulf too. Despite the arrival of the Suhail Star, traditionally a herald of cooler temperatures in the region, the UAE weather forecast refuses to yield to its celestial dance partner. The UAE’s National Centre of Meteorology’s (NCM) bulletin for toady, Tuesday August, 2026 sets highs at a whopping 49ºC, with an accompanying humidity peak of 90%. And remember this was most likely recorded in the shade by specialist-calibrated equipment.
