This new Dubai rent scheme could make paying rent much easier

If you’re renting in Dubai, we have some good news: payment for your annual rent bill could get a lot easier. According to a report by Gulf News, Dubai is set to launch a new “Rent Now, Pay Later” service in September, which will allow tenants to split their rent across up to 12 months, with zero interest. The initiative is being developed by the Dubai Land Department (DLD) in partnership with a local bank, with the aim of giving tenants more flexibility when it comes to rent payments and making housing more accessible. According to a source who spoke to Gulf News, tenants would choose a residential property, and the participating bank would pay the landlord the full year’s rent upfront. The tenant would then pay the bank back in flexible, zero-interest instalments over a period of up to 12 months. Plans for the service are still in the development phase, with full details on eligibility, applications, repayments and how the scheme will work between tenants, landlords and the bank expected to be revealed at the official launch. When introduced, the initiative could make Dubai the first city in the world to implement such a scheme as part of its rental market. The move follows the launch of DLD’s Flexi Rent initiative announced on June 23, which gave Dubai tenants more flexibility by allowing rent to be paid monthly, quarterly or twice a year. Similar to ‘Rent Now, Pay Later’, it was designed to help residents better manage housing costs through more flexible payment options. Over the first phase, DLD partnered with 12 real estate companies that offered the benefits to tenants. It included monthly rent payment options, extended instalment plans of up to 12 months, grace periods, revised payment schedules and, in some cases, waivers on rental increases. The initiative is available to both new and existing tenants. During the launch in June, Khalid Al Shaibani, Director of Rental Affairs Section at DLD stated that this initiative was ‘only the beginning’ and that ‘more initiatives supporting the same objective of making Dubai the best city to live, work and enjoy will be announced in the coming months.’
